Homemade Cheese Straws

Yummy, cheap and flexible: You can make straws, crackers or let the kids cut out shapes.

Ingredients: (Makes 12 large straws or approx. 15 animal shapes)

  • 6oz/150g Self-Raising Flour
  • 3oz/75g Butter or Margarine
  • 3oz/75g Grated Cheddar
  • A Good Pinch of Ground Black Pepper (See Variations)
  • Water
  • Extra Grated Cheese for Topping

  • Beat the cheese and seasoning into the butter
  • Cut or rub the butter mixture into the flour (like making pastry)
  • add water a spoonful at a time until the mix comes together (it should make a ball that doesn’t stick to hands or bowl)
  • Chill until needed then roll on floured surface.
  • Cut to desired shape, place on baking sheet and bake in mid-oven for 10 minutes at 200C/GM6
  • Top with extra grated cheese and place on top shelf for around 5 mins until golden.
  • Put them of cooling rack until hard (they will be softer when they come out, don’t panic! They firm up as they cool.)
  • Serve with dip or cream cheese or even on their own…. Will keep about 3-4 days in airtight container. (Great for lunch boxes/day trips!)

Tips and Variations:

  • They can be cooked an extra 5 mins mid-oven if you think they are not crunchy enough when cooked (or just to serve them warm as it’s yummy), but this is better than over-cooking on the first bake as they will just taste of burnt cheese (trust me, you only do that once!)
  • The Pepper (no salt needed as cheese has salt in) can be replaced with 1/2 tsp of paprika or mild curry powder
  • You can also add a tsp of poppy or sesame seeds if desired.

Happy munching!
