I hope you’re all safe and dry? It’s a bit damp here in Cornwall!
The SATs tests Year 2 and 6 pupils took last month (where the heck did that time go?!) will be being marked as we speak and the results out around the end of June/beginning of July.
As with every exam, the media have got hold of it and done the usual debate regarding the ease and content. I usually take these with a pinch of salt, but this piece from the TES caught my eye.
The article implies that the reading test, in particular, was not a good assessment of a child’s ability. It seems the questions were too based on fact-finding (e.g. “What time does this happen?” and the child just needs to find the answer in the text). This gives no opportunity for them to give a personal response to the feeling of the text (like they would have to at a higher level).
I don’t teach any students to whom English is a second language, but it seems they had some issues with phrases and expressions in the texts.
I hope this is a media dramatisation and not fact, but it’s sad if it is true because the tests could be much more effective than they appear in this report. Begs the question why we put pupils through that stress for such poor quality testing.
I guess we’ll see when the results are sent out. Have a read of the article and let me know what you think.
If you have a child who has taken SATs tests this summer, please don’t panic about the results; the only application for your child is to find a level/group for them to start the new school year with (and this can always be changed as they improve), everything else about the tests is for assessing the schools and teachers, NOT a reflection of you or your child.
I thought I’d share it as it is interesting to see if the article is reflected in the results, that’s all.
