Education News (June 2019)

Hi-de-ho Peeps!

A few things to tell you;

Firstly, Prom/leavers day is looming… I’m very excited for all you leavers, just be prepared. If you haven’t done so already, pre-book any taxis and hired stuff now and plan your day with getting ready time, how you’re getting home (or where you’re sleeping if you live a fair way from school) and sort the little things things like cash you will need.

Secondly, it’s not really new news but Wowcher. I’ve paid a silly-tiny amount of money for 2 courses on Wowcher. I was sceptical at first but they are properly accredited by a recognised distance learning centre. They are great for personal development, updating career skills or just learning a new hobby.

Thirdly, and possibly most importantly, the government are currently working on a bill to reform homeschooling regulations. This is always going to be a double-edged sword because it will stop the few who don’t take the responsibility seriously, but it may make others feel restricted.

I think it’s good from an educators p.o.v. because it stops the first kind but also, if they are officially including homeschooling in Ofsted monitoring then surely it will get more recognition?

At the moment, there are limited options for home-schooled children who want to go on to higher/further education in the UK (as most entrance requirements include so many GCSEs and A-levels, or equivalent). My hope is that if it is more accepted by the education sector then there will be more official certificates and such for them so they don’t have to return to college to progress.

If it is something that would affect you then keep an eye on the parliament website, I’m happy to discuss it further with you if needed. 🙂

Have a good day.
